Based in the northwest region of South America, Ecuador faces the Pacific and is bordered by Colombia to the north & Peru to the east and south. The amazingly beautiful Galapagos Islands with its myriad of creatures is located 966kms west of the South American continent, and also forms part of the country.


Its people are primarily mestizo (mixed Amerindian and white) at 65% of the population. The remainder of the country's people are Amerindian 25%, Spanish and others 7%, and black 3%. While Spanish is Ecuador's official language, Amerindian languages including Quechua are prominent.


Ecuador's landscape is a mixed bag with its coastal plains, inter-Andean central highlands, and its undulating eastern forests. Ecuador boasts many natural wonders including Cotopaxi - based in the Andes, it is the highest active volcano in the world, as well as those created by its settlers - Cuenca & Quito, in particular, both colonial cities noted as World Heritage sites.
