A very popular South American tourist destination, Brazil is well renowned for Carnaval, Rio de Janeiro, Igauzu Falls, and the statue of Christ the Redeemer, one of the tallest statues in the world at 30 metres tall.


Covering almost half of South America, Brazil, the continents largest country, not surprisingly has the largest population at approximately 198 million (ranking fifth in the world). Over a third of Brazil is covered by the Amazon and it borders almost every nation in South America (except Ecuador and Chile). In 1532 Portugal began colonisation in Brazil while the land was inhabited mostly by the Tupi-Guarani Indians. The only country in South America to have Portuguese as its national language, Brazil gained its independence from Portuguese rule in 1822. Its people are a mix of white (53.7%), mulatto (mixed white and black) (38.5%), black 6.2%, Amerindian and other (0.9%).


Brazil is revered for its football proficiency - most notably by players including Pele, Ronaldinho & Ronaldo. The country has won the World Cup a record five times, has never missed qualifying for the event, and is always considered one of the favourites!.
