Located in the north central part of Central America, Honduras offers a Caribbean and Pacific coastline. It is Central America's second largest country and is bordered by Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Most of its landscape is rugged terrain, however it is also marked by river valleys, highlands and narrow coastal plains.
With a population of 7.8 million, Honduras gained its independence from the Spaniards in 1821, forming a federation with four other nations in the Central American region. It left that federation and became independent in 1838.
Travellers to Honduras are most likely to venture out to the Bay Islands, based along the southern end of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Roatan is the largest of the three Isles - at 50km long it has long been described as a divers & snorkeler's paradise.
